Product Details

MainelyPens are handmade writing instruments created by Maine artisan David W. Tabbutt for Gallery Leather. Each pen is hand-turned from resin and materials sourced from Maine's woods and waters, including crushed lobster, oyster, and mussel shells, white birch, oak, cherry, and tiger maple, and even real Maine wildflowers, so no two are exactly alike. Choose a fountain, rollerball, or ballpoint pen, or a matching letter opener.

  • Best for a one-of-a-kind Maine gift, or pairing with a matching Gallery Leather book.
  • Handmade by Maine artisan David W. Tabbutt so every piece is unique.
  • Collections include Maine Coast (lobster, oyster and mussel shell), Maine Forest (white birch, oak, cherry, tiger maple), the Gallery Collection matched to our leather colors, and limited Maine Summer colors.
  • Choose fountain (iridium-tipped steel nib with cartridge and converter), rollerball, or ballpoint in the slim Funline or weightier Gatsby.
  • Letter openers available in gold and chrome finishes to coordinate with the pens.
  • Each piece arrives in a protective velvet bag.

Common Questions

They are handmade by local Maine artisan David W. Tabbutt. The floral pieces are crafted using real Maine flowers by local master gardener Roxanne Smith.
Fountain, rollerball, and ballpoint pens, plus matching letter openers. Ballpoints come in the slim, lightweight Funline with a twist-up nib and the heavier Gatsby with a thicker barrel.
Each fountain pen ships with an iridium-tipped steel nib, a Standard International Short black cartridge, and a converter. Use only fountain pen ink, such as Pilot, Diamine, or J. Herbin. Brush, calligraphy, and technical inks may clog or damage the pen.
No two are identical. Because each pen is made from natural materials such as shell, wood, and flowers, color and grain vary from piece to piece, and slight variations are natural.
Keep it in its protective velvet bag to prevent scratching, keep rollerballs and fountain pens capped when not in use, and flush a fountain pen nib with water from time to time.
No. MainelyPens are not available for wholesale, as Gallery Leather is a distributor for the artisan.
Standard shipping is free on U.S. orders. See our Returns policy for more information.

Just received a Funline pen in Wildflower. The pen is beautiful, and I am impressed with the feel of it. It's a lighter weight pen and very comfortable to write with. I love mine!

Superb craftsmanship 4 people found this helpful
I bought one of their Fun Line Ball Points and a Letter Opener in Maine Cherry Gold as a present for my son, who has his own work shop and is especially interested in woodworking. These are not cheap, but they are worth it. My son will certainly appreciate the high quality of the woodwork. It's not easy to find something as handsome and well made as these two writing implements. They are going to last a long time (certainly the letter opener). The ballpoint has a made-in-Germany refill, but it looks like a standard size that'll be easy to replace when needed. Highly recommended.
